QHA MANAGING DIRECTOR RETIRES
Recently the founder and Managing Director of Quality Healthcare Australia Pty. Ltd. Dr. Robin Pavillard announced his retirement from the Managing Director’s position and all other executive activity. His decision is effective from 2nd July 2010.
Dr. Pavillard founded Quality Healthcare Australia in 2004 after many years as a senior executive at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre [KFSH & RC] in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His extraordinary contribution to the expansion of the reputation of the KFSH & RC as a world class teaching hospital made him a highly respected figure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He has skilfully led Quality Healthcare Australia to build an outstanding international reputation around international hospital accreditation, patient safety, infection control and risk management. Quality Healthcare Australia played a major role in the establishment and development of the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards international accreditation program across the Middle East and India between 2005 and 2008. It is now one of the three leading international hospital accreditation programmes in the world.
Dr. Pavillard was medically trained at St. Mary’s Hospital in London as a clinical microbiologist and immunologist. He has held prestigious positions in the United Kingdom, Australia and Saudi Arabia. He has an international reputation for his work on infection control and effective use of antibiotics in hospitals. His laboratory at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia was the first in the world to grow in vitro methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus [MRSA] and understand and describe its impact clinically. He published the earliest papers on the clinical outcome of MRSA infection and predicted a worldwide epidemic with significant morbidity and mortality unless strict measures were instituted. He established the basis of modern infection control measures [now in common use worldwide] while Head of Clinical Microbiology at Royal Perth Hospital and to this day the Royal Perth Hospital is a leader in infection control in Australia.
He is one of the world’s most knowledgable doctors and scientist in the field of aspergillus infection. His work in the Middle East in this area, although not well known, was of the highest standard and almost certainly saved many lives.
In recent years Dr Pavillard has become highly respected also for his work and teaching on improving patient safety in hospitals and in particular designing safety into the planning, building and commissioning of new and renovated hospitals. His work has had significant impact in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India and Australia.
Dr Pavillard has been an enthusiastic supporter of Australian healthcare, systems and health professionals in extending their influence outside Australia. He has participated in a number of Healthcare Ministerial visits to the Middle East and India. His expertise and wise counsel on such visits was greatly appreciated. He assisted Austrade and the Victorian Department of Innovation in their efforts to support Australian healthcare groups in the Middle East and India. He has promoted through Quality Healthcare Australia the involvement of Australian companies in the Arab Health Exhibition yearly in Dubai.
Dr Pavillard will be continuing his association with Quality Healthcare Australia by acting as a senior advisor on patient safety and infection control.
On a personal note Robin Pavillard is a wonderful professional colleague whose breadth and depth of medical knowledge is always astounding. His ethical and calm approach to any issue is never in doubt. His work ethic, endless energy, and commitment to excellence is also legendary. He is a brilliant and inspiring teacher to all health workers at any level of an organisation. As a mentor and friend he has no parallel. Thanks Robin.

July 2009
Quality Healthcare Australia (QHA) was pleased to be associated with Hymed Systems at the 'TICA' 3rd Biennial Conference, for which Hymed Systems was the Silver Sponsor.
The Directors of QHA have a unique track record in relation to infection control - particularly MRSA, stretching back to the 1960s when a strain of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was first identified at Royal Perth Hospital (imported from another State) in Dr Robin Pavillard's laboratory.
By the early 1980s the science and methodology for controlling the spread of MRSA were well understood and summarised in key reports in the Medical Journal of Australia in 1982. Regrettably over the years many links in the infection control chain in hospitals have been broken due to human error, ignorance or the inability/reluctance of healthcare workers to comply with hand decontamination over the long term.
World-wide historical EVIDENCE indicates that compliance with hand hygiene has been inconsistent and lacking continuity. The infection control REALITY is the need for Health Authorities to adopt an electronic solution for monitoring hand decontamination that is: tireless, not subject to human error and ensures compliance with hand hygiene 24 hours a day 365 days of the year.
In the opinion of QHA the Hymed Systems Hand Hygiene Compliance System meets all these essential criteria.
June 2009 - Hymed Systems visit to Australia
QHA hosted the visit to Australia of the Hymed Systems Management and Development team from the Republic of Ireland. The visit (a World First) commenced in Melbourne and extended to other key cities and States. The Hymed system is an innovative Hand Hygiene Accountability System that monitors compliance with alcohol based hand decontamination in Real Time by Wireless. Compliance is Auto Reported every 24 hours, which encourages an increase in Hand Hygiene Activity of Healthcare workers on a team or shift basis.
The QHA Directors have unique experience in infection control in Australia extending back to the late 1960s; in this context they consider the Hymed hand hygiene system to be a timely, innovative and important advance for the containment of MRSA and other infectious agents that are spread by the hands in hospitals and clinics.
